  56.                               WHAT IS MAGICK?
  57.  
  58.               Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

  60.      Perhaps the easiest  way to answer the question  above is by
  61.      asking: "what ISN'T Magick?".  The following is a VERY
  62.      incomplete explanation of the many facets of the wonderfully
  63.      complex concept which was the prototype for science and the
  64.      forerunner of astronomy.

  66.      Aleister Crowley has written such a thorough essay on this
  67.      subject that I find myself incapable of adding anything which
  68.      does not echo his definition.  Read the introduction of his
  69.      opus "MAGICK IN THEORY AND PRACTICE".

  71.      One must keep in mind that Magick demands repetitious study.  It
  72.      is foolish to assume you have understood something unless you
  73.      have read it several times and have been able to achieve the
  74.      same results every time.  One must approach Magick the same way
  75.      a scientist attacks his experiments in the laboratory; by
  76.      keeping notes.  KEEP A DIARY!

  78.      Ask anybody what Magick is and the first answer you will get
  79.      will have to do with either the superstitious mumblings of the
  80.      Fanatical Fundamentalist or the ridiculing rhetoric of the
  81.      Senseless Skeptic.  This Skeptic fellow has got one up on our
  82.      Fundamentalist friend in that he can still control some of the
  83.      activity in his brain.  There is hope for this one.

  85.      Aleister Crowley defines Magick as "The Science and Art of
  86.      causing change to occur in conformity with Will".

  88.      Ambrose Bierce defines Magic as "An art of converting
  89.      superstition into coin".

  91.      Notice the difference in the spelling.

  93.      To distinguish illusionary Magic from real Magick, Crowley
  94.      chose the Elizabethan variation by using the K at the end of
  95.      the name.  This changes the numerical value of the word and
  96.      should be studied.

  101.      Magick is the method by which all things (be it conscious or
  102.      not) exist and live their lives.  Magick will not transform one
  103.      into something which they are incapable of being.  Magick will,
  104.      however, allow you to recognize who and what you are so that
  105.      your full potential may be realized.

  107.      So much beauty and mystery is found in the surviving literature
  108.      of those who practiced the Art that many artists are
  109.      instinctively drawn to Magick by verse and song.  Ceremonial
  110.      Magick is the physical expression of the great struggle of
  111.      evolution put into mystical dance, it is the essence of what we
  112.      have been, what we are now, and the attempt to assist Nature,
  113.      Our Great Mother, in what we are to become by self-discovery
  114.      and by assisting in our further development.

  116.      In order to understand how Magick works, a few things must be
  117.      said about the mind.  The brain doesn't just store memory; it
  118.      is also capable of behaving as a receiver.  It registers memory
  119.      and then executes the appropriate response.

  121.      Thought & information is maintained within our cells.  The DNA
  122.      of which we are composed carries within it not only genetic
  123.      information, but specific experiences, thoughts, and patterns
  124.      of personality from our parents.  This is often what a person
  125.      experiences in "past life" episodes.  Energy (memory) is
  126.      released by the cell and the brain picks up and processes the
  127.      genetic information retained within the cell.  The brain does
  128.      all this in its efforts to answer those haunting questions:
  129.      Who am I?  Where do I come from?  Where am I going?
  130.  
  131.      Each cell is a separate, living, conscious, life form.  Just as
  132.      we are.  The problem is that we are not, as a rule, consciously
  133.      capable of releasing the data within these cells.

  135.      For the most part we are created, and shaped according to other
  136.      people's fancies.   It begins very early in childhood when
  137.      parents,  (being ignorant of their own wills) impose certain
  138.      things on the child which may be at odds with, could be in
  139.      alliance with, or may not have anything to do with the child's
  140.      True Self.  As a result people live their lives to please those
  141.      around them instead of recognizing who they truly  are.  The
  142.      longer we are forced to do this, the deeper we hide ourselves,
  143.      the harder it is for us to find who we truly are.

  145.      There are two manuscripts which intermingled, have become the
  146.      source of knowledge for the modern-day Magician.
  147.  
  148.      The first is called "The Book of Solomon". It is believed to
  149.      have been written between 100 and 400 A.D.  It is based on the
  150.      myths found in the Old Testament, the Talmud, and the Koran
  151.      revolving around Solomon the King; the author of Proverbs,
  152.      Ecclesiastes, the Song of Songs and Wisdom.

  154.      With the assistance of Demons subdued by a ring given to him by
  155.      the angel Raphael, Solomon built a Temple dedicated to the
  156.      evocation, prosecution, classification and identification of

  160.      malignant spirits.  This manuscript includes information as to
  161.      what names were used to call them and constrain them, as well as
  162.      an elaborate hierarchy based on their power and abilities.  He
  163.      forced demon after demon to concede their name, power, and the
  164.      name of the angel who could be called to control them.  This
  165.      work has been looked upon as the greatest contribution to
  166.      Ceremonial Magick by those who practice it, as it is a very
  167.      complete genealogical tree drawing from Persian, Greek, Jewish,
  168.      and Christian mythology.

  170.      The second is a series of elusive writings received during
  171.      several crystal gazing sessions by two Elizabethan magicians
  172.      named John Dee and Edward Kelley, from 1582 to 1587.  Dr Dee
  173.      anticipated that one could better communicate with the angels
  174.      of God if he could speak in their tongue.  He thus hired the
  175.      assistance of Edward Kelley, a medium, to communicate with the
  176.      angels who would eventually divulge the language of the angels
  177.      called:  Enochian.  This strange speech was believed to be the
  178.      language which Adam used t
